Life on the Lismore Estate in the Late 19th Century
Lecture by Margaret O'Sullivan
On Monday, 19 January 2026, following the launch of her recent book The Lismore Estate under William Robert Hood Rochfort, 1891–1902, in Counties Cork, Limerick and Tipperary, Margaret O’Sullivan will deliver a lecture to Clonmel Historical and Archaeological Society.
Using correspondence and rental ledger books from the Lismore (O’Callaghan) estate, Margaret O’Sullivan will examine everyday life on an Irish landed estate in the late nineteenth century. The lecture will focus on the role of the land agent, William Rochfort, and will explore how tenants articulated concerns relating to rents, livelihoods, and daily hardships, as well as how these concerns were addressed. Through these personal and administrative records, the lecture provides valuable insight into the human dimensions of estate management and tenant–agent relationships during a period of significant social and economic change in rural Ireland.
