Weaving - An Ancient Craft
[also at 14:00] Hands-on introduction to weaving on a sample loom and traditional peg loom, with Leisa Grey
Weaving is one of humanity's oldest crafts, used across cultures for thousands of years to create both practical and artistic textiles. Patterns, colours and techniques reflect local traditions, identities and ways of life, preserving skills and stories passed down through generations.
This hands-on demonstration introduces participants to weaving on a sample loom and traditional peg loom. Visitors will learn the basic principles of weaving and discover how simple threads are transformed into functional and decorative textiles.
Participants will also create their own woven piece inspired by The Colours of My Life, using colour and texture to express personal memories, experiences and connections. This creative activity explores how textiles can tell individual stories while connecting us to a rich and enduring craft tradition.
