Carbon and Oak Gall Inks

Carbon and Oak Gall Inks

Learn to make inks used in medieval manuscripts

Booking: 0526165252 museum@tipperarycoco.ie

Taking our inspiration from writing inks used throughout medieval manuscript production, we will make our own carbon based black inks – the first writing ink used, alongside a demonstration of a variety of historical writing inks – soot, lamp black, bone black and ivory black along with modern day iterations on these sometimes antiquated approaches.

When we have bottled our ink, Annie will demonstrate the process and alchemy of Oak Gall ink – the successor to carbon inks. This is a fascinating foray into the life cycle of the wasps who are responsible for the formation of these tannin rich growths, the science behind its development and movement of this ink technology around the world.

Each participant will go home with a bottle of ink they make on Culture Night, PDF handout with all required information and a new admiration of oak gall wasps, and oak gall ink!
