Bianconi, the Man Who Changed Ireland

Documentary and lecture by Clonmel Historical and Archaeological Society

On Monday 20th October at 08.15pm, the society will hold a showing of the new documentary on Bianconi, the “Man who changed Ireland”.

Charles Bianconi (born Carlo Bianconi, 24 September 1786 – 22 September 1875) was an Italian-born entrepreneur who became famous in Ireland for founding one of the country’s first regular public transport systems .In 1815 he began running a horse‑drawn carriage service (using “bians”) from Clonmel to Cahir. This marked the start of what became a nationwide network of regular, scheduled transport in Ireland. His “Bianconi coaches” linked many towns across southern and western Ireland. At peak, his operations employed 1000 drivers, 840 grooms and he owned 1300 horses. His business partner in Clonmel was Dan Hearn owner of Hearn’s Hotel and manager of the Clonmel route.

Bianconi became an important figure in civic life. He served as mayor of Clonmel (twice) and was also involved in philanthropic and social initiatives, including during the Great Famine period.

Bianconi is often called “the man who put Ireland on wheels” because his coach network transformed mobility for ordinary people across the country.
