Dave continues to craft d eeply\nresonant folk music\, blending rich storytelling with evocative mel odies. Dave is\na versatile musician whose songs and finger-style guitar p laying combine the\nacoustic folk of Nick Drake while maintaining strong l inks to the Irish folk\ntradition. Sometimes songs come along that sound b .oth familiar and new\, and\nDave Clancy is a songwriter with that elusive gift. It was the song that initially\ncaught the ear of the radio playlists\ , and no wonder. Similarly\, ‘Marrakech’\nbecame something of a radio song \, with its nice mid-60’s groove and subtle\nmelody. There were some slow burners\, too\, and ‘Easy On Me’ and particularly\n‘Roundstone’ had a year ning quality that would ensure they would last in the\nlistener’s memory\, both capturing a very personal feel. Rounding off with a\nbeautifully del icate love song’\, ‘Marguerite’\, it was a really wonderful debut.\n\nThe second album Beyond Hard Places took the folkier\, more fragile parts of\n McDonnell’s debut and expanded on them. ‘Moths’\, track number three\, is a really\nbeautiful song of the fragility and anxiety that comes with a ne w blossoming\nrelationship. Wrapped in a natural melody\, it’s a song of r are beauty. There are\ntwo up-tempo numbers on the album\, the hooky ‘Feet First’ and the edgier ‘Broken\nDishes’. The poignant lyricism of ‘Dominic k Street’\, the gossamer light of\n‘There You Go’ and ‘If I Need Your Arms ’\, the warm glow of closing tracks ‘Take\nthe Evening Slow’ and ‘You’ll F ind Me There’. Not to mention the radio hit of\n‘Nearly Four’\, written fr om the perspective of a three year old\, full of joy and\nbravado\, and no little humour (“I’m Batman and I’m Spiderman / I’m a pirate\nthrough and through / I knew all of the alphabet / way back when I was two”).\nIt’s a gorgeous record\, full of subtle\, inviting story telling\, and for anyone \nwho enjoyed early Paul Simon songs like ‘Bleecker Street’\, ‘Kathy’s Son g’ or\n‘Homeward Bound’\, or the more up to date likes of Madison Violet\, Ruth Moody or\nthe Tallest Man on Earth\, there’s likely to be plenty to entice you.\n\nMcDonnell’s third\, and to date last\, solo album\, came in 2009\, in the form of\n“Come Alive”.
